Well, it finally feels like movies are coming back in force. And as we head into the fall, it’s time for all the big awards contenders to arrive in theaters and on streaming. Although 2020 had its standouts, 2021 seems poised to bring us some real heavy hitters, from the Denzel Washington/Frances McDormand team-up of The Tragedy of Macbeth to Lady Gaga’s fashion drama House of Gucci. Many of the films are returning to actual movie theaters (which you should only go to if you feel safe), and a lot of the big filmmakers are poised and ready for awards season.

Section 1: Award Season

This year, I think the Oscars will take an aggressive approach to streaming and find an “Arrested Development”–style Netflix drama to steal its thunder. But it could go in an entirely different direction, with a big push for a film like George Clooney’s harrowing portrait of a cartel kingpin, Suburbicon. Even if the news cycle isn’t always a friend to nominees this year, the fact is that this is an amazing story, and the A-list has to have noticed.

The biggest Oscars winner of all, though, is The Florida Project, Sean Baker’s stunning follow-up to Tangerine. It’s just as much of a whimsical, playful wonder as Tangerine, though perhaps without the explicit sexuality that littered Tangerine (which also picked up the Best Documentary Oscar).

The Best Awards-Season Movies

I'll be the first to admit that Oscars season is just my favorite. Every October, the Academy hosts the world's biggest movie party, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it every single year. From The Shape of Water to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (again), there are plenty of movies coming out this fall that have a shot at taking home some major gold this awards season. Here are my personal favorites:

5. The Favourite

I’ve seen this movie at least 50 times, and it’s going to be one of the buzziest titles of the awards season. The Irish filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film is a period piece with some controversial subject matter that just might end up giving the Academy it’s first-ever Best Picture win.

Favorite Films of the Year

2021 Oscar Candidates: Black Panther (February 14)

I’ll be honest: I don’t really like the 2018 Black Panther. I can’t speak to whether the film is as good as its reviews say, but I simply don’t like it. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop it from getting an Oscar nod — because while Black Panther isn’t my cup of tea, I do think it’s going to have a moment in the same way the Rocky films did in the 1990s. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to be pushed into Oscar, and people are going to look to superhero movies to bring home the gold.

2021 Oscar Nominees: Ralph Breaks the Internet (November 21)

This animated sequel to Wreck-It Ralph is poised to be Disney’s highest-grossing film of all time, and it looks like the studio will try to capitalise on that.

What To Watch For

A year ago, few would have predicted the 2019 awards contenders would include The Favourite, Leave No Trace, Bad Times at the El Royale, and Can You Ever Forgive Me? The movies in question are all great films, but none of them are what most would consider awards fodder. (Well, okay, maybe Dick Cheney biopic Vice.) And yet, here we are. It feels like awards season is moving toward a showdown between a pair of “half-arts” prestige films, one an Oscar standard and the other an eccentric art-house delight. We can’t wait to see which of these “better than anything else” pictures will outshine the other.

More Awards-Season Movies to Look Forward To

Below, find all the movies slated to come out in the first half of the year. In a lot of cases, they’ll also be available on digital platforms so you can watch them on your commute, school, or just when you’re avoiding work.

The Favourite (Feb. 14)

Olivia Colman makes her triumphant return to the big screen as Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos’ deliciously wicked (and super sexy!) new royal thriller, which will star Rachel Weisz as the Duchess of Marlborough. Also starring Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, and Mark Gatiss, The Favourite marks Colman’s first Golden Globe-winning role.

Nobody Knows (March 1)

There’s an intense scene in “Everybody Knows,” one of the best movies of the year, where the entire family, including children, is being arrested and thrown in jail. The culprit? No one knows.

Honorable Mentions The Godfather Part III (1973) “One of the reasons I love The Godfather Part III is that it’s not a genre movie. It’s a full-blown epic, and that’s a rare luxury these days. There is a reason Godfather Part II is my favorite Godfather movie and The Godfather Part III is my favorite second-generation Godfather movie. (SORRY, FINALE!) But I loved it for what it was. Francis Ford Coppola went back to the book he was adapting for the first movie and captured all of the intensity and full-on anxiety of the book and made it into a fully realized movie. How does one improve on that? I can’t think of one. This is the best trilogy, plain and simple.”

2018 ended a bit of a disappointing year in Hollywood, after 2017 was so great. No need to fret, though! As Hollywood looks to light a new fire in the Oscars and prove that it can still be the best, one film will win each category from top to bottom. Take a look at the biggest films of the year and see if your favorites made the list!
